Wedding Cake Trends

16th July 2019

Wedding cake trends have developed rapidly over the recent years, with the cake becoming more of a focal point than ever before. Couples are not only choosing from a range of scrumptious and indulgent cake flavours but from show-stopping works of art that simply look too good to eat! Expert wedding cake maker, Lydia Monkely, from Lagom and Love, has shared her thoughts on what’s hot right now and what’s next in the world of wedding cakes!

Current Trends

More couples are going for a ‘perfectly imperfect’ look – they want it to look effortless, natural and inviting. Florals, greenery and even herbs are also super popular and look divine; especially when the bride’s flowers are used, creating a centrepiece that seamlessly fits in with the rest of the decor. Some love the idea of a little abstract texture and colour which creates a gorgeous handcrafted, painted look.

Edible toppings

Edible toppings are a wonderful way to ensure zero waste when it comes to your wedding cake. Couples truly want their cake to taste as good as it looks by opting and edible toppings make that possible. I am often asked for handmade macarons, chocolate, torched Italian meringue and salted caramel popcorn.

You and your cake

Couples are looking for designs that are timeless, natural and suit their own taste and personalities rather than following a trend. Like the rest of their day, they want it to be tailored to them – whether this is a super simple cake with a hint of greenery or bright colours to emulate their taste.

Flavours

A lot of couples are choosing to have three or four different flavours used in their cake, which really adds a wow factor. Some of the most popular but more exciting flavour combinations I have been asked to make this year are pistachio and raspberry, earl grey, lavender and lemon or spiced banana and salted caramel.

Still In

Semi naked cakes are still very much in, which create a rustic vibe whilst still looking neat. With any icing, sharp, clean edges are always a must. On the other hand, fondant cakes are still popular for those looking for a polished, super full coverage look.

Whatever your wedding cake style, you can’t help but lust over Lydia’s beautiful wedding cakes so do head over to her Instagram @lagomandlove for more inspiration.
