Q&A with Wedding Photographer Robin Bradshaw of Bullit Photography

13th May 2020

Q&A with Wedding Photographer Robin Bradshaw of Bullit Photography

This month we’re heading behind the scenes as we catch up with Robin Bradshaw of Bullit Photography, who photographed Samantha’s wedding to Julian at Dewsall, 12 years ago. Robin has been shooting weddings 14 years and although based in the Cotswolds, Robin enjoys photographing all over the country! Read on for some more insight into the world of wedding photography…

How long have you been photographing weddings for and how did you get into it?

I have been a wedding photographer for 14 years, I shot a friend’s wedding and realised how much I enjoyed and thrived in this environment. The first year I shot 28 weddings, the following year 48 and since then have been consistently busy.

How would you describe your photography style?

I get asked this all the time. A couple of words that always spring to mind are Freestyle and Offbeat, although words cannot really describe what I do. It is about capturing moments and emotions throughout the day in a creative fashion. Moments that you will enjoy looking back on for years to come. It’s a really important part of the day.

What’s the most memorable wedding you’ve shot?

Every wedding is fantastic and they all have amazing things happening. Probably the most memorable though is the wedding of Dermot O’Leary to Dee Koppang. It was a beautiful September day, there were so many things going on and loads of great image possibilities. I started at 9am and finished at 1am the following day.

Do you have a favourite time of year for photographing weddings?

The summer months are great in that you have longer days and more natural light to play with. Winter weddings can be more atmospheric and you can draw on different light sources to create interesting shots. My favourite month of the year to photograph is September, the sun is lower in the sky and the light is beautiful.

Are there any particular moments of weddings that you love to capture? Do you have a favourite part of a wedding day?

Catching people unaware, or in that golden moment before someone realises they have been captured, but not had a chance to react. These moments happen throughout the day. I enjoy the day from start to finish. I love finding spots to take the couple away to for a couple of minutes at a time. It is about managing the time so that the couple feel you have complimented the day, and still got some amazing shots.

Do you have a pre-wedding questionnaire or method of gaining insight into what the couples want for their wedding photographs?

Yes, I send out a questionnaire asking couples for details of the day, and any thoughts that they might have.

Who, or what inspires you?

Music massively. Before I was a photographer, I was a DJ and Club promoter. Music is so powerful and mood changing. Photographers that I love include Jurgen Teller and Helmut Newton. A beautiful painting.

What advice would you give to couples looking for a wedding photographer?

These two things are a MUST.

1/ Really look properly at the photographer’s images and see if there is something that you like about the style that they shoot.

2/ Do you think you and your guests will get on with the photographer.

Do you think that wedding photography has changed much over the years, in the way that couples want to be photographed on their big day?

The whole concept of a wedding has evolved over the last 15 years, with new and stylish venues cropping up all over the world. The role of the wedding photographer is no longer just about capturing the family shots. It is about capturing the essence of the whole day.
